Where do we draw the line?

Universities must uphold certain standards and embrace their role as forums for open discourse, nurturing diversity of thought and perspective. However, this freedom of expression must be accompanied by accountability measures that ensure a respectful and constructive environment, preventing hate speech and discrimination. Striking this balance is challenging, as institutions must safeguard inclusivity and safety while also addressing the intricacies of social and political expression.

Be it resolved: We need to critically assess current practices and consider the implementation of new measures by bringing to question:

• When should universities weigh in on international events?
• How do they determine their stance and messaging?
• Should universities adopt political positions?
• Should political rallies find a place on campuses?
• Where does the boundary lie between free speech
  and the imperative of safety and inclusivity?

Media, Bad Actors And
The Neutrality Factor

Traditional media has always reported on issues with a view to maintaining neutrality, giving both sides of every argument the opportunity to further its voice and agenda. But that doesn’t work when bad actors take advantage of these entrenched practices, at times, offering false claims at extended length without being held to account. How can public trust in media and news organizations improve in the face of bad actors using these platforms as a source of power to shape their own reality? How can traditional media push back on these bad actors? 

Be it resolved: We need to design best practices on how to deal with bad actors who disrupt and undermine the journalistic system.

Distrust in Society

We live in an era of massive distrust – from leaders gaslighting their team members, to politicians swaying voters through smear campaigns, to AI generated content that makes it difficult to discern between what’s real and what’s not. Distrust is pervasive throughout governments, in our day-to-day relationships & transactions, and within the corporate world. How do we move from a time of human division and polarity to that of human connection and unity? What changes need to be made within our institutions and ourselves to build back trust?
